The Grills, Hopkinton, Redux

2.29 miles   2.3 mph

i headed in to this property from the hopkinton entrance today. the first part of the hike goes through a farmer’s fields, and of course i picked the day he fertilized with liquid cow manure. ever smelled that stuff up close and personal? i’ve been living in the country for almost 10 years now, and let me tell you, it’s pretty eye-wateringly foul. and it was a very short hike due to the property being flooded in so many places from last week’s rains. and the fact that there is no bridge over the tomaquag brook means you still can’t get from the hopkinton side to the westerly side. maybe in a drought, when the brook is low, but certainly not today. [would you like some cheese with that whine?]

the beginning of the peninsula trail... maybe some other time!

again, i should have known not to pick a hike right next to the pawcatuck river, which was pretty high due to the more than 7 inches of rain we got last week. i’d have needed a boat to hike this trail. and i got wet, muddy feet AGAIN as it was. although it certainly wasn’t as bad as mud-tober mountain state forest last week. all that whining aside, however, this will be a very pretty hike in dryer conditions. it goes for a long stretch right along the river, and the flooded peninsula trail promises to be very interesting, too. i’ll try again when things dry out!

i did not add this hike to the hikefinder since it really wasn’t truly hikeable. you can see the combined hopkinton/westerly grills map in the hike by this same name.

I made the same mistake on Saturday and had to backtrack when the trail disappeared under water due in a flooded out swampy area.
