Vin Gormley Trail

★★★★★  6.57 miles

wow. only the third hike this month! between the frequent rains, family obligations, and intense gardening, i can’t seem to find the time to get out into the woods. i have some serious work to do if i’m going to get any significant mileage in, and only 8 more days to do it. anyway, today was a hike with the usual suspects…

…on the beautiful vin gormley trail (named after the gentleman who first blazed it and maintained it; close friend of one of the ladies i hike with). the weather was quite muggy, but not horribly hot. this is a great trail. it circumnavigates watchaug pond in the burlingame state forest, and part of it goes through the popular campground, but mostly it’s woods. lots of lovely little rushing brooks, and streams, and little waterfalls. it was quite wet in a few spots, due to all the rain we’ve had lately. and there were plenty of spring ephemerals in bloom.

the trail is wonderfully maintained by the rhode island chapter of the appalachian mountain club, and has many boardwalks over the swampier parts.

and we saw some wildlife! this baby snapper was crossing buckeye brook road, on a stretch where the trail follows it for a bit. we “helped” the little fella off and into a swamp. hope that’s where he was originally headed…

OK, that didn’t go through as planned. As I was saying….the yellow star grass is cool. Good to know what it is.
