Almost Tefft Hill

5.8 miles; exeter, ri
this is my favorite hike in this part of arcadia, starting from the state garage on route 3 on the richmond/exeter line. this is the one that goes under route 95.
apparently the state is installing traffic cameras and lights through here, and there was a crew hard at work laying conduit for electrical lines. the good news is that they’ve provided a port-a-potty for the workers, so this is another one for “hikes with (temporary) bathrooms!”
interestingly, this was not much of a detour, but some very angry yellow jackets guarding a boardwalk on the yellow-blazed arcadia trail proved to be a much more formidable obstacle. we did a bit of backtracking and a bit of bushwhacking, and got most of the hike in anyway, so it wasn’t a total loss. i’m not sure what i’d have done if i had been hiking by myself. i might have tried racing past them and taking my chances on getting stung. guess we’ll never know.
this is turning into an absolute banner year for mushrooms. we saw more varieties than i could count today, and i even managed to collect “a few.”
yep, those are black trumpets. i actually got so many that i started leaving them because i had to worry about carrying capacity, and i’d hoped to find some cinnebar and golden chantarelles. as you can see, not so much. yet. what we did see were tiny. i HAVE to come back here next week.
and if you’re wondering what on earth i plan to do with all those mushrooms, here are a few recipes i’ve gleaned from the internet. black trumpet puffs, black trumpet dauphinoise potatoes, midnight rice, and black trumpet fettuccine. think i’ll go with the fettuccine first, then try the midnight rice if i can find any black italian rice in the stores.
you can find the actual planned version of this hike on my hikefinder. trailhead, trail map courtesy ri dem, with my track added to their map.
