Arcadia WMA, Breakheart-Shelter-Hudson Loop

5.1 miles, 2.4 mph; exeter, ri

this trail starts, and ends, with the john b. hudson trail in arcadia. it goes from 165 to breakheart pond on the hudson trail, then takes the breakheart trail around to the north of breakheart pond, then comes back down the hicks trail (an old road) back to the breakheart brook fishing access trail, which intersects frosty hollow road for a short spell and then loops back to the hudson trail on the shelter trail. it’s a nice 5-mile lollipop loop.

because the amc, narragansett chapter, is in charge of trail maintenance in arcadia, all the trails are well-blazed with excellent signage, and this loop is no exception. oh, except for the fact that both the hicks trail (an old dirt road) and the breakheart brook fishing access trail are not part of the amc trail system. despite that, they’re pretty easy to find and follow.

there’s still some water left in breakheart pond.

millipede!

millipede!

and you know how once you notice something, like a car or a new word, you suddenly see or hear it everywhere? well i had never seen a millipede until a few weeks ago when i saw several on the bluff head section of the mattabesett trail. wouldn’t you know i saw one on this hike, too. this guy was moving all his thousand legs and zooming across the trail.

fairy door

oh, and another fairy door like on the duval trail. really? looks like the same “artist,” too.

you can find this hike in the hikefinder under breakheart pond loop.
