whew. mount tom can be a bear of a trail at the best of times, and i am still a little rusty, north south trail trek notwithstanding. at any rate, there’s more climbing on these trails than i have been doing. so this hike was a much-needed workout. i also got to see a trail i had never been on before in arcadia, the sand hill trail. although i may have been on the northern leg of this; don’t remember for sure.
i was kind of likin’ this lichen. ha. get it? loved the colors, though. seriously.
and here i am summiting mount tom. a lot of people are under the mistaken impression that the summit is the high ledges overlook south of route 165, but in actuality, those ledges are almost 100 feet lower in elevation than this pathetic little cairn of rocks on the north side of route 165 that is the actual “summit.”
this club moss was lit by the early spring sunshine just right… only the the tips were lit. very striking.
this hike was an exaggerated lollipop loop that began and ended at appie crossing in arcadia, on route 165. the loop part was on the north side of the road. i have attached an edited d.e.m. map of our trip to the hikefinder.
