Bay Circuit Trail, Section 13, and a Cranberry Bog

today i took a drive out to the south shore of boston to visit a friend and we hit what i hope will be the first of many sections of the bay circuit trail. it was a very short part of section 13, but interesting. and since it was so short, we drove from there to a local cranberry bog and did a circuit around that, too. this is a really pretty part of massachusetts. and note: my mileage is beginning to creep up!
this particular section of trail, which starts at location “B” if you’re looking at the section 13 map, follows along the south bank of the satucket river in east bridgewater for a short stretch. the trail is pretty flat and heavily travelled, and apparently was recently the site of the great east bridgewater pumpkin war of 2013, as there were smashed jack-o-lanterns (jacks-o-lantern?) all over the place.
it’s also quite liberally sprinkled with benches.
we went from the bct to a local cranberry bog and did a circuit around. i’ve never been up close and personal with a cranberry bog. this one was recently harvested, and still has a cranberry color from the autumn foliage of the bushes.
there were a couple of places where the harvest apparently spilled out of whatever trucks they use. you can see that besides the berries, they also harvest lots and lots of leaves, which then get separated out and composted. it was a grey, overcast day right up until we got off the trail, when the sun burst out and the sky cleared. guess we should have waited to go out.
Good to see you’re getting back to speed. The BCT has some very nice (and not so nice) sections. I’ve done Maps 1-9 ending in Medfield. I still have a long way to go but I’ll finish it some day.
Happy Hiking!
That cranberry bog looks familiar…. were you dog bogging with Jo-Ann? Rita loves to go dog bogging up there.
good guess. yeah, jo-ann, nick, and i went. nice spot!
[…] was in the woods looked familiar… yes, on researching it, it was the bit I’d done with my friend Jo-Ann back in November of 2013. So that’s how long I’ve been wanting to hike the Bay Circuit Trail and thinking about […]
