Confessions of a Recovering Gardener

anyone who knows me has heard my extended rant on gardening. like how no matter what you think you’ve learned about 1) pest control; b) disease control; III) weather protection, critter avoidance, variety selection, blah, blah, blah; there’s always something else waiting in the wings to sabotage your efforts. always. and i’m just tired of fighting. i’ve let my husband take over virtually all the gardening duties, with the very minor exception of a little “garden” of pots of herbs. which, by the way, got attacked by the neighbor’s peacock. so even that wasn’t immune from nature’s incessant trickery.

but there are still a couple of things i can’t go without, and that the dh isn’t interested in planting, which leaves me no choice but to dip a very reluctant toe back into the soil. garlic is one of those very rare things. and like flower bulbs, it has to be planted in the fall, so with a heavy sigh i ordered a pound of organic korean red and ventured out to plant.

these are huge cloves, by the way. there’s nothing there for scale, but trust me, they were about 2″ long and very full. this is a hardneck garlic, which means i’ll be harvesting scapes next june. unless, of course, the peacock decides he likes garlic scapes…
