One of my PCHC friends decided to play hooky to go visit a real waterfall, so we headed over to Chapman Falls in Devil’s Hopyard SP. It did not disappoint! He was also impressed with the view from the end of the Vista Trail, and really, who wouldn’t be? Good hike.
We’ve had a lot of rain recently, although not enough to pull us out of the “moderate drought” category on the USDA’s drought monitor website. Still, Chapman Falls was pretty respectable.
In spite of the cold weather, there was still some fungus to be seen. This is witches butter, Dacrymyces palmatus, which, I am told, is edible, but only if steamed or boiled. And as far as I’m concerned, only if starving. And on the verge of death.
This section of the orange-blazed Vista Trail hugs the bank of the Eight Mile River through here. It’s really beautiful, and you could imagine you’re in Maine or New Hampshire.
You can find out more about Devil’s Hopyard State Park at the CT DEEP website, which includes a link to a trail map. Trailhead: 41.484229, -72.341862; 4 Foxtown Road, East Haddam, CT.
