while in tiverton, we also took a quick trip to fort barton, a revolutionary war historical site and fantastic hiking trail. the last time i was here it was december, so it was nice to see it in the summertime, too. found some nice chanterelles here.
this is the sign for fort barton, which you can see from the parking area on highland avenue in tiverton. it’s a steep climb up to the observation tower and the old earthen redoubts. in fact, there’s a lot of steep sections on this trail; lotta ups and downs.
the trail crosses and re-crosses sin and flesh brook, which is just about the best place name ever.
saw some turk’s cap lilies peeking though the foliage while on one of the many little footbridges on the red trail.
there were lots of puddingstone boulders through here, too. puddingstone is just a generic name for stone with lots of inclusions of rounded rock. it looks to me like a natural form of cement or concrete. this part of rhode island has a lot of these boulders.
you can find fort barton in the hikefinder.
