Francis Carter Group Hike

5.09 miles; charlestown, ri

today i hiked again with the facebook group, “take a hike.” great bunch of people, so glad i joined them.

busted!

busted!

this poor little toad probably thought he’d found the perfect spot in the crotch of a tree. he forgot that he was right next to the trail, though. everyone got a photo of him, and you could just hear him thinking “damned paparazzi…!”

as many zillions of times as i’ve hiked this preserve, i don’t think i ever hiked the meadow trail that goes around this enormous field. it was revelatory. i don’t think i ever want to miss this again. and it added another mile to the hike, so it was all good.

the meadow was dotted with stands of milkweed, and they were quite the hubs of activity. i don’t know what kind of beetles those are but they appear to be having a good time.

the border of the field was full of all kinds of plants, and all kinds of insects. this bindweed was so pretty, but it’s such a nuisance in the garden.
