Garden Club Hike at Tefftweald

1.8 miles; North Stonington, CT
This Avalonia property is a former Girl Scout camp, and there are several old buildings still extant, including a nice picnic pavilion. It was more of a meander than a real hike, but a nice walk nonetheless.
Tefftweald is bounded on two sides by Wyassup Brook and this particular side, the south boundary, has been messed about quite a bit by beavers, making it a kind of flooded marshy meadow.
There is a lot of old stonework on this preserve, and best guess is that it’s Girl Scout in origin, although it could be colonial.
Spring ephemerals are still very much in evidence, as this yellow star grass can testify.
It’s been so dry lately that there wasn’t a lot of mushroom action, but we did come across this nice big and unfortunately buggy bunch of oyster mushrooms. It was a bit past its “sell by” date.
We had a nice morning in the woods, even if it was a bit muggy. The temperatures seem to have moderated a bit from the nearly-90s of the last few days.
Looks like sculpture, doesn’t it?
