Grandfather's Field

1.1 miles; Sherborn, MA

This is a Trustees of the Reservation property which is actually a part of the Rocky Narrows Reservation in Sherborn. It’s a very beautiful spot to from which to view the Charles River, as there are no buildings on either bank for a long stretch. This was also part of my “Easy Walks” tour of Sherborn with my friend Marjorie.

The Actual Field

The Actual Field

This hike starts from a small, scary parking area on Farm Road, which is on a bend. Kind of tricky to get out of… use caution.

Brown Puffballs

Brown Puffballs

Found a little cluster of these brown puffball mushrooms, and juvenile that I am at heart, I couldn’t resist giving them a squeeze to see the “smoke” come out.

Beautiful Trees

Beautiful Trees

Part of this trail is on private property (you’re requested to stay on the trail so as to not intrude), and there were these beautiful coppery conifers that had us both puzzled. Not tamaracks. Whatever could they be? Mr. Google was able to help me once I got home, they’re Dawn Redwoods, Metasequoia foxii. This wikipedia entry has more info on them.

Feathery Foliage

Here is a close-up of the lovely feathery foliage.

Love That Dirty Water

Love That Dirty Water

Yep, it’s the Charles River. Not very dirty out this way, though. This looked like a fantastic paddling spot. The river is wide and placid through here and there is no development on either bank.

Really Wide

Really Wide

We’ve had tons of rain lately, and unfortunately this was as far as we could travel on the wide smooth cartpath—at least without the aforementioned kayak or canoe!

Late Bloomer

Late Bloomer

I didn’t realize that dandelions had a late blooming flush in the fall, but Grandfather’s actual Field was dotted with them. That little fly in the middle must have thought he’d hit the jackpot.

At this stage of my post, I’d love to point you to a website where you can find out more about this property, and maybe view a map. Sorry, Sherborn has a booklet and they charge $15 for copies. You can find out more and download a map of the Rocky Narrows Reservation from the Trustees of the Reservation website. As always, click the image above for details about this hike and to download the gps track.
