Hell Hollow North and Pharisee Rock Trail

wow, soooo humid today. i kept having to stop and wipe off my fogged glasses. buggy, too. i had originally planned to do the full 8-mile hell hollow loop, but by the time i’d done the northern part, i realized i didn’t have time to do all of hell hollow because of an appointment. then it was too early to go to the appointment, so i had to do something… another hike! i took a quick trip up to pharisee rock in sterling.
last time i hiked this trail, i commented on a beaver dam which kept the water level of the pond well above the height of the trail. well, the beaver dam is beginning to leak, and the trail is getting eroded and soggy.
this has been quite the year for black trumpet mushrooms. i’m seeing them everywhere. i’m leaving them be. i have enough, considering that my husband won’t touch them, much less eat them.
i just kind of liked this guy, with his fat little stem and jaunty orange cap.
these are curiosities. i’m tentatively identifying them as amanita mold, which is a fungus which grows on amanita mushrooms. but that’s just a wild guess.
don’t know what these beauties are, either. they look like wood shavings.
you can find both hell hollow and pharisee rock in the hikefinder. hell hollow trailhead, trail map. pharisee rock trailhead, trail map which includes a section of the pachaug trail as well.
