Hell Hollow South

4 miles; voluntown, ct
i really wanted to do the whole 8-mile hell hollow loop but i got out too late—timing is everything on these shorter december days! not to mention that i’ve been finding it hard to get motivated lately. but still, it was in the mid-40s and a beautiful clear day, so i took what i could get.
you can see the long shadows in this shot of hell hollow pond. it was only maybe 2-2:30, but a december afternoon is a fleeting thing.
this sign for the quinebaug trail is so small and weathered i nearly missed it.
there was nobody around but a few trucks were parked at phillips pond. in fact, the only people i saw today were some kids on atvs. yes, atvs on the blue-blazed “hikers only” pachaug trail. welcome to the pachaug state forest, alas.
i love this section of the trail north of phillips pond. it’s on a red/blue blazed trail that connects to the pachaug trail. bonus: it’s too narrow for atvs to fit.
you can find the hell hollow hikes in my hikefinder.
