Johnston Memorial Park

2.3 miles; Johnston, RI
So I’ve been busy taking my mom to and from her various Doctor’s appointments which all seem to be in this one big medical building in Johnston, RI, and I’ve been driving past this municipal park with a walking trail. Today I was downright envious of the folks I saw enjoying the sunshine, so when my “mom” stuff was done I dropped by Job Lot and bought some socks so I could throw on my hiking boots and walk myself. It’s been too long and my legs were just itching to walk, so I let them.

Turtles
The shortest trail, the Pond Walk, circles Pocasset Pond. It’s hard to see in this photo, but every available log was festooned with a turtle or two enjoying the July sunshine.

Signage

“Blazes”
Kind of hard to miss the footprint “blazes” on the pavement.

Arrows
But I went around on the yellow path three times before light dawned on Marble Head that the red arrows were actually blazes for another path.

Thistles
The 1-mile “Hill Walk” did indeed have a nice hill on it which was enough to get me puffing a bit. It was also lined with lots of vegetation—a veritable cavalcade of invasives plus some nice native plants, like these thistles.

Freshly Mown Ballfields
This is a complete municipal park, with some impressive war memorials, playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, and several ballfields. The smell of the newly mown grass was intoxicating.
