Kettle Pond-Kimball-Burlingame

4.6 miles; Charlestown, RI
I haven’t done this one in ages, and it was a good day to get out and get a bit of mileage in. Although I did fall and AGAIN land on mah butt… This is getting monotonous.
It was another of those cold, bright winter days, and the shadows were long. We’re closing in on the Solstice now… only a couple more weeks and it starts getting better.
I never know what to call these. Bog bridges? Boardwalks? Whatever they’re called there are a whole lot of them on this stretch of trail. This is on the North-South trail just after turning off the Vin Gormley Trail in Burlingame.
Poor old pine branch… it was just covered in lichen.
The Rhode Island Bird Atlas has a route marked out on part of this hike. Each blaze is marked in meters. This was the 50 meter blaze. Not sure how this works, but if you’re interesting in finding out more, you can go to the Rhode Island Bird Atlas website.
You can find out more about the trails of Kettle Pond at this website (pdf file). Note that Kimball Wildlife Refuge trails are also on this map. Audubon sold the property to the RI DEM in 2015, and it is now part of Burlingame State Park. There is no trail map online that I could find that includes both the Vin Gormley Trail and the trails of the former Audubon property. Burlingame is mainly known as a campground, and camping maps are the only maps you can find. As always, click the image above for details about this hike and to download the gps track.
