My First Snowshoe Attempt

.7 miles; north stonington, ct

welp, the “storm of the century” didn’t really materialize, or at least us elderly veterans of the blizzard of ’78 weren’t impressed. but it was still a lot of snow compared to what we have had so far this year, and it kept me inside for a few days.

that’s the 18-inch mark on the yardstick, in case you can’t make it out. and it was still snowing at this point.

so, the snowshoes. i bought them last year, intending to use them if i had to, but i never really had to. the box was still sealed. they’re atlas electra winter play snowshoes.

so i strapped them on and headed out into our field. i guess they worked as advertised… i wouldn’t say i walked “on top” of the snow, but i didn’t sink down too deep, either. the snow was quite light and powdery. i will say it’s a lot of work. and i’m glad i also went out and bought a pair of waterproof boots and gaiters. the snowshoes flip quite a bit of snow up in the air behind you as you walk, much of it, in my case, smacking me in the butt.

i’m not quite ready to hit a hiking trail in these, i’m afraid, but i do plan on getting more mileage in and around my yard in the next couple days.
