i did a quick visit today to my local section of the narragansett trail. i had an appointment right afterward, so i had to hustle, but it was still a lovely day to be in the woods.

water over the dam

water over the dam

there’s water flowing over the dam at green fall pond, though not a lot, since it’s been so dry around here.

baby pinecone

baby pinecone

i don’t think i’ve ever noticed a baby pinecone before. so cute!

laurel buds

and the mountain laurels are almost in bloom. almost…

baby snapper

and speaking of babies—check out this baby snapping turtle. it was no bigger than a silver dollar, and majestically unconcerned with me as i bent down to take its photo. i get massive old snapping turtles laying eggs in my gravel driveway every spring, and their nests usually get dug up and robbed by the next morning, by either skunks or raccoons, so it’s nice to see that, once in a while, some survive.

you can find this hike in the hikefindertrailhead*trail map, courtesy of david brierley from his website the story of the yawgoog trails. *note, i like to start this trail from the southern end of the gorge, parking on sand hill road and hiking it clockwise. that puts a boring road mile at the end and almost all downhill.
