Natchaug State Forest

★  4.42 miles

ugh. what a miserable hike. the route i picked was all downhill going out and all uphill coming back. do the math… that’s more than 2 solid miles uphill. and it was hot, and the blackflies were thick and very annoying (some cheese with that whine?). the river was pretty, but there were a series of rv camps on the other bank that were noisy and smelly. not much to recommend.

beautiful old hearth

this is (thank you wikipedia) all that is left of the birthplace of general nathaniel lyon, who was the first union general killed in the civil war. it’s part of the natchaug state forest.
