Non-Hiking Hiking Post, Again

so as i hinted at in an earlier post, i have come to a parting of the ways with shirley. her empty weight was 5 1/2 pounds, and that’s just too much. granted, she was comfortable, up to a point. that point was reached for me on the duval trail a few weeks ago. i went back to rei and traded shirley in for… wait for it… LAVERNE. natch. laverne is a deuter brand pack which weighs much less than shirley did (3 lbs. 4 oz.), and has special cooling mesh do-hickey at the back. may i just give rei props for taking shirley back and giving me a full refund? if you’re going to buy a piece of equipment that will cost you a lot of money, it is totally worth it to buy it at rei. complete peace of mind.

and on a totally different subject (okay, still hiking related), I HAVE FOUND ANOTHER HIKEFINDER! this is so exciting… go now and check out trails and walks in rhode island. it’s organized into categories of hike length, so you can find a hike to suit your time and expertise. great, great photos, too! the author has explored more walks in the northern part of rhode island, and because he is based in providence, he plans to include more southeastern massachusetts, too. highly recommend.
