North South Trail Trek, Leg 2

13.8 miles 2.7 mph
wah. this one nearly kilt me. i actually, at the 10.5 mile point, i again contemplated calling the dh to come get me. at that point i was, best as i knew, still 4 miles from the car. it was my last chance, though, as the last 4 miles was all in the woods. i thought about it long and hard, and decided i couldn’t live it down if i bailed, so i finished. fun fact: leg muscles can cramp even as you’re using them. did not know that. do now.
in spite of my copious wingeing about this hike (and ask the dh… it was COPIOUS), i really enjoyed it, with the exception of the 3.6 miles of road walking in the middle. this photo was at the very beginning, near meadowbrook pond (see leg 1). the trees in the distance are the carolina management area south, but first you have to traipse through (around) a gigantic cornfield, and a turf field, and then another corn field to get there. as you can see, the weather started out lovely. it deteriorated a bit, though, as the day wore on. and on. and on. it got colder, windier, and more overcast. not real pleasant.
this simply adorable pond is at about the 8 1/2 mile mark, towards the end of the long road-walking segment. cute tugboat.
in my opinion, this was the most beautiful sight on the entire trail, the place we all parked in the morning at browning mill pond in arcadia. did i mention i got a blister? i got a blister.
i’ve put this hike into the hikefinder.
Good job hanging tough and finishing the full distance.
thanks. i think it was worth it. i’ll let you know when my legs stop hurting.
