Pachaug SF, Gallup Road Loop

not a great start to 2015. i just couldn’t motivate, till the hubs dragged me out to do a quick ramble in the pachaug state forest, near green falls pond. on the plus side, i got to hike another small section of the cpfa trails i hadn’t hiked before, the orange + blue blazed green falls pond trail.
naturally, he was off to the races. his normal hiking speed is over 3 miles per hour, and mine is about 2-1/2 miles per hour on a good day. he even did a longer loop than i did, and he still passed me before i got back to the car.
the trail we followed was mostly a woods road that had seen a lot of motorized vehicle traffic—lotta rocks and loose sand. the exception was the cfpa trail along the western shore of green falls pond, which was bouldery and root-filled and a much more typical hiking trail. it was a blast.
green falls pond was covered with a thin coating of ice. it’s been pretty cold here lately.
and i came across this in a couple of places, where the ice had formed crystalline structures and then shattered. i have no idea what causes it, but it’s pretty cool looking.
i have added this hike to the hikefinder. trailhead, trail map
