took this short hike out to the bay specifically to see seals on the rocks off the point. no seals, but lots of interesting trails with interesting sights. cold, though!
rome point in wickford is just opposite fox island, which you can see in the center(ish) of the panorama, above (click to embiggen). fox island was the last of the islands in narragansett bay which was privately owned, but i believe it was seized by the feds, because the man who owned it was a dentist who committed massive medicaid fraud. on children. nice island, though.
also at the point, which is covered in old red cedar trees, i found a tidy little fire pit, watched over by this guardian angel in the crotch of one of the surrounding cedars.
and someone decked out this cute little holly tree, further into the woods. i especially liked the tennis ball ornament.
and still further along the trail there was this magnificent rusting old hulk. it must have been a beast in its day.
you can find out more information about rome point (technically the john h. chafee nature preserve) and the seals at the rome point seals website. i could not find an online trail map for this hike, but there is a rome point walk and map in ken weber’s 2005 book, weekend walks in rhode island (#34).
