Sakonnet Greenway Part 1

5.8 miles; Portsmouth and Middletown, RI

I’ve had this hike on my “Wanna Hike” list for a long time. It hits a lot of my favorite things about hiking: a long distance, a greenway,  mostly flat… all good stuff. Alas, this was just not my day to hike. I was feeling under the weather and didn’t hike at my usual speed and I had things to do on a timeline, and as a result, I wasn’t able to finish this entire hike, hence, the Part 1 part.

Totally a greenway

Totally a greenway

This hike is very much a greenway… that is, walking along the perimeter of fields. And on Aquidneck Island, greening up, to boot.

Giant Chicken

It goes behind and between a lot of houses, too. These folks had a giant metal chicken in their backyard. Very cool.

Lovely Bench

Lovely Bench

This looked like a lovely spot to have a sit-down. But I wasn’t in the mood to stop.

Fantastic Boardwalk

Fantastic Boardwalk

The map for this routed the trail through what was designated a wetland or swamp, and I got a kind of bad feeling about that. Then I came to this amazing fantastic boardwalk. Beautiful. It goes much further than pictured.

Newport National Golf Course

Newport National Golf Course

Towards its end, the trail circumnavigates the Newport National Golf Course. Which was actually much nicer than it sounds, as it was mostly behind a thick screen of shrubs and brush. And it was very clearly marked through here, also.

Sweet Crocus

Sweet Crocus

After finally leaving the golf course behind, the trail winds along behind some more houses, and someone planted a mess of happy purple crocus. Thank you, unknown person! It really cheered me.

Final Loops

Final Loops

At its southern end, the Greenway makes a couple of loops—one green-blazed and one yellow-blazed. This is the point I had to bail on the hike, as it was getting later than I was comfortable with. I will have to come back and just do these loops sometime. Maybe after mud season.

You can find out more about the Sakonnet Greenway Trail on this Aquidneck Land Trust website. As always, click the image above for details about this hike and to download the gps track.
