Sheep Farm

2.34 miles, groton, ct

this groton open space association (gosa) property is a gem. beautiful trails wind past historic mill sites and by waterfalls and through fields. wish it was bigger. for a complete description of the site, i’ll just send you to the gosa website, and this article by a friend.

the trail

the trail

the trails wind up and down from the parking area to fort hill brook and back. there are not just one but two waterfalls, the remains of a massive old dam, and several old tote roads.

garden design

this little arrangement in the ford of fort hill brook on the old colonial-era road is just perfect. you couldn’t design a more beautiful arrangement. well, i shouldn’t speak for you… i know i couldn’t.

faces in things

faces in things

hey tree! why the long face?

milkweed

milkweed

the meadow area of the sheep farm is bursting with wildflowers right now. i saw more plants than i can name. i suspect some of them are not wildflowers, per se, but escapees from the gardens that i assume were here when the old homestead was standing. right now it’s home to butterflies and dragonflies and damselflies galore.

dam

dam

here are the remains of the old dam which helped to power the lower, downstream, mill. this is a cool place to find ruins, as well as wildflowers.

i have added this hike to the hikefinder.
