Reed-Mitchell Preserve

2.66 miles   ★★★½ this is an avalonia land conservancy property in north stonington. it includes a pretty little brook, some very cool glacial erratics, and lots of old stone walls. however, i can’t express how much i hate walking on the thick carpet of leaves that obscures the trails. very annoying. not that i’m expecting […]

Pendleton Hill, Legendwood, and the Narragansett Trail

4.85 miles   ★★★★★ i had the most fun hike ever today! a friend who lives up on pendleton hill in north stonington invited me up to see their land, which abuts the pachaug state forest. it’s a gorgeous property, with some very cool features, including a giant oak tree (said to be the oldest and […]

Narragansett Trail, N. Stonington

5.81 miles   ★★★★★ fair warning: i will be doing more than my share of whining about this hike, but believe me, ultimately, they are all minor quibbles. it’s a beautiful hike. first whine? the narragansett trail. whoever first laid this trail out must have searched high and low for every single boulder field and abandoned […]

Narragansett Trail/High Ledges Section

3.31 miles   ★★★½ wow, first time i ever cut a planned hike short, but this was much more hikey than i thought, and was taking just too much time. also, too, the bugs were ferocious. nice hike, and i’d like to do it when i have more time and there are fewer bugs. it would […]

Legendwood/Narragansett Trail

★★★ wow. seriously challenging hike. 100% hikey, severe climby parts. just all around tough walking. but it was my first hike with my new gps, and i LOOOVEE my gps. even if i can’t yet figure out the whole geocaching thing, i always knew exactly where i was in relation to the car. very cool. […]

Hewitt Farm

★★★★ very nice. fairly clearly marked trails. about 80:20 hikey:walkey, with some serious climby parts, but they are worth it, because you get up to tipping rock (below). came to about 2 miles. there’s a geocache near the cemetery, but i didn’t find it. didn’t really look for it, because it was windy and cold.
