The Grills

always on the lookout for a high mileage hike, in order to get conditioned for hiking in ireland (have i mentioned i’m going to be hiking in ireland?), i decided to hike every single trail, with the exception of the peninsula trail on the hopkinton side, on both the hopkinton and westerly grills. that’s a respectable amount of mileage! it also kicked ma butt.
this is a pinesap plant about to flower. pinesaps (Monotropa hypopitys) are parasitic plants, like bear corn, beechdrops, and indian pipes. they’re especially beautiful when they’re young like this. love the colors.
the cardinal flowers are almost spent, so it’s always nice to find a patch still in bloom. they’re so vivid.
i’ve been heading out earlier and earlier lately, trying to shift my clock to avoid the worst of jet lag, and it’s kind of nice to see the low morning sun once in a while.
not sure what these are. i thought they might be elderberries, based on the foliage around them, but elderberries are a deep purple color, not blue, so your guess is as good as mine. feel free to weigh in in the comments.
you can find the hopkinton and westerly grills in the hikefinder. trailhead, auntie’s trail map.
The berries might be silky dogwood. But more importantly — where are you going in Ireland!
thanks for the i.d., and i’m going to be hiking the kerry way. well, not the entire trail, but most of it. starting in glenbeigh and finishing in killarney. can. not. wait. also, stay tuned. i plan to blog the trip.
Ooh, I’m envious. I lived in Cork for nearly three years, and counties Cork and Kerry are something special.
