The Old Carriage Road

3.3 miles; north stonington, ct
during a picnic one afternoon, a neighbor of mine asked me if “the old carriage road” was still there. she grew up in town and used to ride her horse on it. i really had hardly noticed it before she mentioned it, but there is what looks like an old, overgrown road that heads north from the street i live on, into the woods. and since she mentioned it, i’ve been kind of obsessing about it. so today, i took a few minutes late in the afternoon to go exploring.
i haven’t included any photos of it, because, as far as i can tell, it’s all private property, although maybe the actual right-of-way might still belong to the town. it heads about a half mile north before having been taken over by a landowner for a paved driveway. another friend of mine who’s familiar with the area calls the driveway “route 95.” and rather than spend a lot of time on a driveway, i bushwacked east to avalonia’s yannatos preserve, where i’ve walked before, and from there back home.
the good news is that i did come back down my road right at what photographers and filmmakers call “the golden hour,” that hour before sunset when the light is rich and golden. timing is everything in life.
look at that light! and the color of that maple. amazing.
and this is a shot of the pond that’s right in my back yard. i know, right?
i’ve not added this to the hikefinder for the obvious reason that it’s basically all private property.
