Tillinghast Management Area

5.5 miles   2.6 mph

just the two of us usual suspects again today, and we moved pretty smartly through this nature conservancy property. we are now in another hunting season—turkey, i believe—so blaze-orange is again a necessity on most of these properties. shirley is up to 25 pounds now and boy, i felt that additional 5 pounds!

small white violet

small white violet

found a little flush of small white violets (Viola pallens) in the boggy part of the trail. there were very few actually blooming yet, but it’s encouraging to actually see wildflowers finally!

leatherleaf

there was leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata) blooming in the pond, too. it was actually IN the pond, though, so i couldn’t really get a close-up. the flowers are very similar to blueberry flowers, which makes sense, since both plants are in the same family.

quaker ladies

and it’s always lovely to welcome the quaker ladies back. they are also known as bluets (Houstonia caerulea).

this hike is in the hikefinder, but i have edited the entry to reflect the mileage more accurately and update the link to the online map.
