Tippecansett-Deep Pond Trail Loop

4.25 miles; exeter, ri

remember last week when i said

and to make matters even worse, when i created the map for this hike, i discovered, to my horror, that there was STILL a section of the tippecansett i haven’t hiked yet. D’OH!

well, suck it, trail completist people. i finished off that last little section today. and while i was doing it, i remembered that it is part of the hemlock ledges hike. so, i guess today was somewhat unnecessary. except that i got to see a section of the deep pond trail that i wasn’t familiar with, and incidentally, which i have also now hiked every inch of. that’s right. another trail done.

start of the end

start of the end

this hike was a loop that started and ended at the roscoe m. dexter fishing area in arcadia. i parked here to do another section of the tippecansett also. you follow the white-blazed deep pond trail from 165 to the yellow-blazed tippecansett, above.  this is a very nice stretch of trail, which goes through old hemlocks and along the shore of beach pond.

it was a gorgeous late fall day, with temps in the 60s.  the tippecansett trail through here crosses route 165 and heads up into the rolling hills that are north of 165. it eventually levels out and begins to follow an old woods road about 2-1/4 miles from the parking area, which it continues to do until the intersection with the white-blazed deep pond trail at old voluntown road. so this one is pretty simple… white to yellow to white.

old voluntown road becomes civilized at about the point where you make that final turn south and head back into the wildlife management area. someone has put up american flags all along this stretch of road, i presume in honor of veterans’ day.

this last bit of the deep pond trail again follows an old woods road, gradually trending downhill back to 165.

it’s a very pleasant walk. i passed a couple of old cellar holes and an historical cemetery that could use some work. because i’m kind of leery of ticks, i didn’t venture in to explore.

and here is the roscoe m. dexter fishing area, complete with my car, across 165.

i have added this hike to the hikefinder, under tippecansett-deep pond trail loop.
