Trustom Pond NWR

yet another gorgeous day in rhode island! this is a beautiful refuge, although the trail system is small. small suited me just fine today, and my ankle felt pretty good the whole 2 1/4 miles. and since this is another federal property, the trails are all pretty flat and accessible.
also, again, federal property = great signage.
there is an old windmill on the reserve, so this must have been a farm at one time. i wonder if the people who originally farmed here enjoyed the ocean view, or if they were just too focused on survival to care. i like to think that they took a few minutes from their labors to just revel in the beauty.
there was lots and lots of milkweed all over the field portion of the reserve. the fine feathers always remind me of fireworks.
this is the view from the otter point observation platform. there were quite a few birders here with fancy cameras. i didn’t see much bird wise, besides cardinals, chickadees, and on the water, a few cormorants.
here is my track, via the gaia gps app on my iPhone. trailmap and the coordinates for the trailhead for trustom pond can be found in the hikefinder.
